"How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young. It will never be older than this particular day of June. . . . If it were only the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old! For that--for that--I would give everything! Yes, there is nothing in the whole world I would not give! I would give my soul for that!" (p. 28).How important is your youth to you? How much do you think about the loss of youth? What is it about the loss of youth you find most disturbing?

ReplyDeleteI think that youth is a stage that someone should have fun in before they have to lose the ability to do somethings due to age. My youth is important to me because of the friends I have made and the things that I might not be able to do later in my life. I rarely think about my youth because it is not something that one should worry about at all in my perspective. I think that one should only look back at all the things they have done in their youth when they are older, and they should look forward to all the things they have yet to do, and all the things they want to accomplish
Well I have to say that there are amazing things in life both when you have your youth and when you are older. I know that no matter what there are always going to be great opportunities in life, because of this keeping my youth is no more important than becoming old.

ReplyDeleteAs Hunter sort of said, youth is a stage in every persons life that they have to life through. We all want to stay eternally young (like Dorian), but then you never get to see the most important things in life like: family, helping the poor, but most importantly growing up

ReplyDeleteYouth actually doesn't seem that important to me. I would never make the choice to forever stay young, mainly because I don't want to have to watch everyone i know and meet die. Although it would be kinda cool to watch how much the earth changes over the course of hundreds of years, I still don't think it's worth it.

ReplyDeleteSurprisingly, youth has a fair amount of importance in my life--I wouldn't want to be foolish and waste it all away like Dorian Gray (I mean, look what it drove him to do!), but I would still like to 'live in the moment'.
p.s. When I tried to comment, it wouldn't work unless I let it use my AIM name for some reason, so that's why I put my name at the top. :)

ReplyDeleteScience has proven that the longer you live, the quicker time passes to your perception. A world where one year will mean as much to me as one minute does now is grotesque. However, I also the brevity of our experience in the world disturbing to say the least. This has given me a crisis like no other. I can see the appeal of eternal youth (and this may bypass the perception of time thing), but I also find that as almost cheating the world.

Wow, hunter your first comment is so... deep!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I love youth (mainly because of our awesome metabolisms :]), but also because of the seemingly endless possibilities. There is so much to look up to, and not very much to look back upon, which I really love. In my opinon, there are also a lot less letdowns, since there is less time to acquire them. Youth is really a beautiful thing, but overated in this time. Older women try to look younger, but I honestly dont think that its worth it! With age comes wisdom (or senility, whichever), and I can't wait for that either. I think aging and youth, though quite different, have their perks, and that, like Christine said, it is best to live in the moment.
And I love the graphic, by the way... Making it my background as we speak.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do think about youth often and I would give something (albeit insignificant) to stay youthful, I would not be as obsessed as Dorian is.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I really like the photo.
